Field guides / When the plan breaks
What did I actually recover after a loss?
Start a four-line list: hull, installed equipment, carried kit, loose cargo. Give each its own last-known place and next check. A returned hull does not settle the other three lines.
What to check
Identify the item and the kind of loss
For each line, note whether it was in station storage, on your character, fitted to the ship or physically aboard as freight. Inspect the locations you can access, including the selected inventory view. An icon in the wrong location can make a recovered item look missing.
Choose the applicable recovery route
Read the current on-screen claim or recovery terms before confirming anything. RSI’s ship insurance FAQ concerns ships; RSI’s personal pledge-item guidance covers lost pledged personal items. Do not infer that a purchased hull, upgraded part and loose crate share the same terms or recovery destination.
Reconcile what appeared
After the process finishes, open the returned ship or storage and identify the exact item. Check the fitted variant and quantity, not just the ship's name. Record absent, replaced with stock, recovered, or not checked. Only budget a replacement after you know which line is unresolved.
Worked example
One hull back, three questions open
Your returned ship is in the hangar. The loadout screen shows its standard cooler; your list said you fitted a different one. Count the hull as recovered and the upgraded cooler as unconfirmed. A cargo invoice from before the loss proves a previous purchase, not that the crates are now inside the returned ship.
Proceed or hold
- Proceed when
- You can identify the actual returned item in its present location. Close that line only.
- Hold when
- You have a claim timer, purchase record or entitlement but cannot find the item. Keep it unresolved and check the relevant official procedure.
