Field guides / When the plan breaks
Which charge or sentence am I resolving?
A warning marker, a visible charge, an active sentence and a release confirmation are different pieces of evidence. Start with the one you can see on the character you are playing.
What to check
Identify the authority and entry
Read the location or jurisdiction, offense and status. If a terminal offers payment, check the exact charge and amount immediately before confirming. RSI’s crime guide explains the game's crime system. Do not substitute an old tier chart for the options shown to your character.
Choose the action that corresponds to that entry
If you intend to pay a listed fine, record the before state and check the remaining entries afterward. If you are considering surrender or another path that changes custody, read the prompt and decide whether you accept that outcome. A reduced balance or one cleared charge does not clear the rest.
Verify the resulting state
In custody, distinguish a timer or expected release from actually leaving through the provided process. Afterward check location, charge or sentence state and available actions again. If progress stalls, record the step and current build; use RSI’s service status page for published service incidents, not as a verdict on your personal account.
Worked example
One payable fine disappears
You paid one named entry. Reopen the list: a second entry remains and has no pay option. Mark the first as cleared and the second unresolved. Repeating the same payment, following an old guide or seeing a smaller total would not prove the second has been disposed of.
Proceed or hold
- Proceed when
- The specific charge or custody state you set out to address has visibly changed as intended.
- Hold when
- The terminal names a different offense, the prompt changes custody unexpectedly, or the screen shows an estimated time without a confirmed release.
